MATTHEW FONTAINE MAURY was known as the Father of Oceanography and the first Director of the US Naval Observatory. He discovered and plotted the tropical currents cutting shipping time by many days. He later served as Commodore in the Confederate Navy and developed lethal land mines that endangered the Federal fleet.
