THE VACANT TOMB - Logos of St. Andrews Spring 2003, by Jerry Ogles
THE VACANT TOMB
The day broke clear and sunny,
that day so long ago,
When they crucified my Saviour -
their sin they did not know.
He hung betwixt two bandits
as the sins of all He bore.
The God-man Christ was offered
the fallen to restore.
From Calvary's Hill the watchers
and those who loved Him dear
Observed the shameful violence
with sorrow, guilt and fear.
The darkness came at noon-day
midst gestures, scowls and jeers,
And the reckless hearts lost
courage,
replaced by mournful fears.
An earthquake shook the mountain,
and rent the temple veil,
As Christ gave up the Spirit
Our burdens to dispel.
Tears! Tears! aplenty!
Behold Him on the tree!
The Rock of our Salvation
has died to make men free.
The endless ages echo
the love for God's redeemed
By the only Son Begotten -
the sacrifice supreme.
The Lamb of God is Victor
o'er satan's vaunted realm.
He's the Shepherd of His people
and HIS hand is at the helm.
The garden tomb is vacant.
No Saviour could it keep.
The risen Christ awaits us
to become his favored sheep.
AMEN
